Privacy Policy

Who we are
LatePals ("we", "us") is the social network you use at latepals.com and in the LatePals app. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, why, how it's used and shared, and the choices you have.
Questions about your data? Reach us at kevinbuhl98@gmail.com.
Information we collect
We only collect what's needed to run a social network:
- Account information: name, email address, password (stored as a one-way hash, never in plain text), date of birth.
- Profile information you add: bio, hobbies, city, occupation, profile picture and cover photo.
- Content you create: posts, comments, likes, messages to other users, photos and videos you upload, marketplace listings, and groups/pages you create or join.
- Connections: your friends, group/page memberships, and anyone you've chosen to mute.
- Usage of the service: which posts you've viewed and for how long — used only to show you more of what you engage with on LatePals itself. We don't use cross-site or cross-app tracking for this.
- If you just visit (for example, reading the Journal without an account): like every website, our server records technical information such as IP address, browser type and which pages were requested, in short-lived server logs for running and securing the site. For advertising cookies, see "Advertising and cookies".
- Keeping fake accounts out: the IP address an account was created from (to limit bulk sign-ups), and a record of when your email address was confirmed. Reports you send about content are seen only by the site owner.
- Technical information: IP address and timestamp at login (used to detect and block repeated failed login attempts), and a required session cookie that keeps you logged in.
How we use it
We use your information to:
- Run and display your feed, messages, friend connections, groups, pages and marketplace listings.
- Let you log in securely and protect your account from unauthorized access.
- Show you notifications about likes, comments, friend requests and messages.
- Show you content that's more relevant, based on your own activity on LatePals.
- Comply with applicable law, prevent abuse, and enforce our policies.
Who we share it with
We never sell your personal data.
- Other users: your name, profile picture, and the posts, comments and messages you choose to share are visible to other users to the extent you've chosen to share them (e.g. public posts, or messages to the specific person you're chatting with).
- Google (advertising): we show ads from Google AdSense — see "Advertising and cookies" below.
- Hosting: our hosting provider stores data on our behalf to keep the site running, but doesn't use it for its own purposes.
Advertising and cookies
LatePals is free and funded by advertising from Google AdSense. Ads only appear on pages with content, such as our Journal articles, and are always labelled as ads.
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and other websites. As a result of ads being shown here, third parties may place and read cookies in your browser, or use web beacons and IP addresses, to collect information.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising in Google's Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu.
- How Google uses information from sites that use its services: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Your consent: visitors in the EU/EEA, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent before advertising cookies are used, through Google's certified consent banner. You can change your choice at any time with the "Privacy and cookie settings" link the banner leaves on the page.
Our own cookies: we use one required session cookie that keeps you logged in and remembers your language, and store your chosen theme locally in your browser. Neither is used for advertising or tracking.
How long we keep data
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we permanently delete your profile and content — see how to request deletion of your account and data for exactly what gets deleted and how quickly.
Security
Passwords are never stored in plain text — only as a secure hash. We use CSRF protection on forms and recommend the site always be accessed over HTTPS. No system is 100% secure, but we work to protect your data as well as we can.
Children
LatePals is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under the digital age of consent in your country (13 in Denmark). If you believe a child has created an account with us, contact us at kevinbuhl98@gmail.com and we'll delete the account.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, restrict or delete your information, as well as the right to data portability and to object to our processing. Contact us at kevinbuhl98@gmail.com for access, corrections or an export of your data, or use the account and data deletion page directly. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet, datatilsynet.dk), or your own country's data protection authority, if you believe we're not complying with applicable data protection law.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The date of the most recent update is shown at the top of this page.
